Darkening of the Year
On weekdays, I get up at 5 am. I thrive on routine and love having quiet morning moments all for myself.
A few days ago I woke up and something was off. The darkness has started to creep in. I thought to myself: „This can´t be, it´s mid July and the summer has just begun“. I am aware that since the summer Solstice, the light is being cut in the evenings but mornings are a different story. For a while now, I´ve been used to waking up to sunlight, feeling joyful, eager to start my day.
There was an aching realization that the change is underway, that the darkness is on the rise, that the summer is slipping through my fingers.
While studying astrology with Nightlight Astrology, we´ve been learning about the light and dark interplay within the zodiacal year and it felt a bit abstract for me at the time. Feeling this physically in my environment, in my body, made all the difference.
The ingress of the Sun into the sign of Cancer, the moment of Summer Solstice, marks the critical point on the Sun´s upward journey as the Sun is reaching its highest point in the sky. Since this moment, the Sun is starting its downward journey - the light of the day is decreasing and the darkness is slowly taking over.
To me, summer has a strong „Loss of innocence“ theme (summer love, the way kids grow up over the summer...). It is present both in the sign of Cancer and Leo though expressed through lunar and solar lense respectively.
"Could it be nostalgia, a collective hankering for a lost innocence?"
Sunday Times
"Over time, naturally, you lose your innocence from gaining knowledge. You can't be innocent forever, but there's something in innocence you need to regain to be creative."
Albert Hammond, Jr.
Light is conducive to life, to growth, to stability.
When shadows start coming in, the uncertainty rises. As when we step into shadows, we are turning inwards, becoming more aware of darker side of our existence.
With the descent of the Sun into the darkness, we are slowly being prepared for this inward shift, becoming more receptive, embracing things that coming to us that often cannot be changed through our will.
Cancer is the water of life, life giving and life threatening at the same time.
Leo is the last fortress, the last frontier of light burning passionately to ward off the powers of chaos that are coming in.
It is hard to shake off this summer blues though the light is still strong.
Let´s ignite our hearts, let's put on our golden armour as we are stepping into the Leo season….
Keep hope alive, keep dreaming.
Petra
